Astrology Podcast Guest Shanae Smith
I recently had the absolute pleasure of being a guest on the Hex Haven Podcast—and this conversation? It was fun and deliciously deep in the most beginner friendly way possible.
This wasn’t a fluffy zodiac chat. This was a slow-burning, soul-rooted exchange about what it means to grow into yourself, what astrology actually offers us as a tool for purpose and communication, and how we navigate connection—especially when the road feels long, unseen, or thankless.
🌙 “Sewing the Backpacks” — The Work You Don’t Get Applause For
At one point in the conversation, we landed on a metaphor I hold close: sewing the backpacks.
It’s based on my grandmother’s life. By day, she worked as a seamstress in a factory, sewing backpacks for people she would never meet. By night, she raised three motherless children who were not her own by birth, but were deeply hers in spirit. Her life was stitched together with purpose, service, and a kind of uncelebrated resilience we don’t talk about enough.
We explored how that metaphor mirrors the early stages of purpose-driven work—the part where you’re grinding quietly, building slowly, and showing up even when no one sees it. So many of us are there right now. Sewing the backpacks. Carrying what matters. Becoming who we’re meant to be through effort that doesn’t always get applause.
🪐 Astrology: Not an Answer—Not a Silver Bullet—A Framework
One of the hosts, Sharon, admitted she came into the conversation skeptical. She had always associated astrology with vague horoscopes and personality tropes. But something shifted when I shared this:
“Astrology is the study of the quality of time.”
It landed. Suddenly, astrology became something dynamic—not about labeling people, but about understanding seasons, rhythms, cycles, and process. Sharon described it perfectly afterward:
“Our conversation drove it home for me that astrology is anything but vague oversight. Instead, it seems extremely individualized and complex. The idea of an onion sticks out. The deeper into the layers you get, the deeper your understanding of self becomes.”
Heather, on the other hand, came in curious but cautious. What struck her most was how specific astrology can be—how even a few minutes’ difference in birth time shifts your Rising sign, your chart angles, and your experience of life. She said:
“I thought of astrology as something vague or general… but after learning how detailed and personal the charts can be, I started to see it as a meaningful tool for understanding not just myself, but others as well. Who knew it could help you communicate better?”
💞 When Charts Collide: A Taste of Synastry
We also touched on synastry—the part of astrology that shows how your chart interacts with someone else’s. Sometimes it creates harmony. Sometimes tension. Sometimes it’s a puzzle piece. Sometimes it’s a matchstick.
It’s not about compatibility in the dating app sense. It’s about awareness—learning how your planets activate someone else’s, and how understanding those dynamics can soften your responses and strengthen your relationships.
Heather beautifully summed this up when she said:
“Even with my basic understanding, I’ve felt this strange but undeniable pull between people—like the universe has its own way of guiding our connections.”
